Leadership for the future

FMLM Conference 2015
23 – 25 February, Manchester Central

There is no doubt that 2015 will be a pivotal year for UK healthcare. Leadership for the future focuses on the potential which great medical leadership can bring to one of the best healthcare systems in the world, and will follow six themes in contemporary leadership:

  • Learning from mistakes without blame – time for a new compact between patients, lawyers and doctors
  • Revalidation and the opportunity for a step change in quality
  • Co-ordinated care and the end of primary and secondary care
  • Education for leadership
  • Diversity and a system of all the talents
  • Leadership of major technological advances and the empowered patient

I very much hope you will be able to attend. Medical Director of NHS England, Bruce Keogh will be speaking and bringing his medical director team along, it is vital that the Royal Colleges are also represented to reinforce that the Faculty is a College not an NHS body.

The FMLM membership has risen to 2,000. One of our strengths is that over 50% of members are trainees or medical students. However, as a member of its Council, we remain disappointed with our consultant membership and specifically the data base shows that there are only 29 members of the FMLM who identify the RCOG as their primary College. It is critical that we increase senior membership particularly among medical directors and clinical directors. I firmly believe that this will happen as we roll out our Standards for Medical Leadership and Management, at and then following the conference and apply them to the appointment and appraisal of medical managers. To that end I would encourage you to consider joining. Membership also gives you a preferential rate to attend the conference.

You can find out more about the conference and membership of the FMLM at https://www.fmlm.ac.uk/

In summary, I would be grateful if you would

  1. Consider attending the FMLM Conference in Manchester on 23 to 25 February
  2. Promote the meeting amongst colleagues and trainees alike and consider joining the FMLM.

Thank you

Dr David Richmond PRCOG
