Disability and women’s health: advice from medical professionals

The Paralympics took place in London between 29 August and 9 September 2012. An estimated 4200 athletes competed in these Games in events including rowing, swimming, table tennis, wheelchair basketball and athletics.

The RCOG put together a series of podcasts to raise awareness about women with disabilities, with a particular focus on spinal injuries. The podcasts answer questions women may have about their reproductive organs, future fertility, giving birth, bladder and bowel problems, living with a disability and support networks.

Gynaecological problems, fertility, pregnancy and birth in women who have a spinal injury

The first interview is with Mr Ian Currie, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. Ian is involved with the National Spinal Injuries Centre (NSIC), which provides both treatment and rehabilitation. Ian is also Vice President (UK Affairs) of the RCOG and specialises in urogynaecology.

In this podcast he talks about gynaecological problems women may face who have a spinal injury, and fertility, pregnancy and giving birth.

The role of occupational therapists – treatment, support and lifelong follow-up

The second podcast is with Emma Linley, Head Occupational Therapist at the London Spinal Cord Injury Centre, who discusses the role of occupational therapists, the support women with a spinal injury will receive while at the centre and lifelong follow-up support.

Pregnancy and disability

The final podcast is with Carmel Bagness, Midwifery & Women’s Health Adviser at the Royal College of Nursing. Carmel is a registered nurse, practicing midwife and midwifery educationalist. She talks about pregnancy and disability, the importance of disability awareness and she discusses the wide range of disabilities including mental illness, physical disability, long-term conditions, hearing and vision impairment and learning disabilities.

The RCN has produced guidance for midwives and nurses on pregnancy and disability which includes four case studies.
