Dr Jenny Barber

Vice President for Clinical Quality

Jenny Barber is a Consultant Obstetrician at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

She has a specialist clinical interest in perinatal mental health. She contributes fully to the on-call rota and is Consultant Lead for Labour Ward and Obstetric Governance. She has also held the position of Divisional Governance Lead for Women’s and Children’s Services, overseeing implementation of the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF). These roles have given her real-time, lived experience of the operational, safety and strategic challenges facing women’s health services.

Jenny holds a Master’s degree in Healthcare Leadership (Distinction) and received the NHS Leadership Award for Senior Healthcare Leadership in 2018. She has played a significant role within the RCOG in recent years, lead co-authoring the 2021 publication Roles and Responsibilities of the Consultant and chairing the Workforce Working Group, which produced the 2022 Workforce Report. She was the Members’ Representative for North-West England on RCOG Council from 2022-2025. She also serves on the Workforce Board and co-chairs the ‘Workforce of the Future’ workstream within the Gynaecology Surgical Skills project. She has contributed to various safe staffing projects involving the RCOG, NHS England and Birthrate Plus. 

Jenny’s leadership experience includes fellowships with Health Education North-West and NHS England, as part of which she re-designed rotas, delivering significant cost savings and improving continuity of patient care. She has also contributed to national frameworks supporting trainees returning to work.

Jenny is passionate about supporting evidence-based practice, our workforce and listening to women to advance safe, high-quality care for women and girls globally.
