Vice President for Workforce

Sujeewa Fernando is a Consultant Obstetrician and Urogynaecologist at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, part of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, where he serves as Clinical Director for Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Recruitment Lead for Women’s Services.
He is also the Urogynaecology Preceptor for Wales, contributing to the development of high-quality training and services across the region.
A dedicated trainer and educationist, Sujeewa was awarded both the National Trainer of the Year and Welsh Trainer of the Year titles in 2020. His leadership is strengthened by formal management training from The King’s Fund, London, and CLIMB Wales, equipping him with strong strategic and organisational expertise.
He serves as an MRCOG examiner, Medical School examiner for the University of Liverpool and recruiter for Bangor Medical School, reflecting his deep commitment to medical education and workforce development. He is also an RCOG Representative for Consultant Appointments, ensuring robust professional standards in recruitment and selection.
Sujeewa has held several senior educational roles, including Acting Head of School and Deputy Training Programme Director at HEIW, RCOG Tutor and IT Committee Member of the British Society of Urogynaecology. Nationally, he has contributed as a PLAB Examiner and ITEM Writer and Examiner for the Fitness to Practise Pilots at the General Medical Council, highlighting his commitment to excellence, fairness and integrity in assessment.
As Vice President for Workforce, he is dedicated to creating a sustainable, well-supported and empowered O&G workforce for the future.
