The RCOG is launching a major initiative to ensure that the MRCOG Part 3 exam continues to offer a fair, robust, and globally respected assessment of clinical excellence.
Why we’re launching this project
The MRCOG is widely regarded as the gold standard qualification in obstetrics and gynaecology, recognised globally for its rigorous and reliable assessment of clinical competence. As demand continues to grow—particularly following increasing numbers of candidates sitting Part 1 and Part 2—it is essential that the MRCOG Part 3 evolves to meet this rising need while maintaining its world-class standards.
Established in 2016, the MRCOG Part 3 has now been in place for nearly a decade. This represents an important opportunity to review and futureproof the examination, ensuring it continues to reflect the evolving needs of the profession and remains responsive to the changing landscape of postgraduate medical assessment.
The Part 3 exam tests clinical assessment of knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies, reflecting the capabilities outlined in the RCOG’s Core Curriculum. While the exam is grounded in UK clinical practice, its rigorous structure and high standards have enabled it to be recognised and trusted in more than 100 countries worldwide
What the project will deliver
The project will focus on:
Expanding capacity
We will increase the number of exam places both in the UK and internationally, improving access and flexibility for all candidates — and supporting timely progression through training.
Upholding quality and driving innovation
Reviewing and refining the Part 3 exam to keep pace with advancements in clinical practice, assessment methodologies and technology, ensuring it continues to meet the needs of the UK training programme and the global O&G community.
Enhancing sustainability
Modernising the exam model through improved operational efficiency, digital innovation, and more sustainable practices.
Supporting candidates and examiners
Enhancing feedback and support for candidates, strengthening recruitment and training for examiners, and ensuring equity through a fair and inclusive exam experience.
Why this matters
This project reflects the RCOG’s ongoing commitment to:
- Maintaining the MRCOG’s reputation as the gold standard qualification in obstetrics and gynaecology
- Supporting the next generation of O&G professionals
- Delivering a high quality, fair and accessible exam experience
- Ensuring the MRCOG remains relevant as a postgraduate medical qualification and continues to align to GMC standards
What’s next
The project will be delivered in two phases:
- Phase 1 (2025–2026): Expand capacity and improve operations to meet short-term demand and support UK career progression
- Phase 2 (2027): Launch a future-facing exam model that is scalable, sustainable, GMC-approved and informed by global stakeholder input
We will continue to share updates as the project progresses and will work closely with candidates, examiners, Heads of Schools, the National Trainees Committee, and our international partners throughout.
