About Dr Alice Unwin

Alice is a specialty doctor in obstetrics and gynaecology at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and also serves as Co-Representative for the South West on the RCOG SAS and LED Committee.

She is the O&G department lead for undergraduate education, and educational and clinical supervisor for foundation doctors.

Developing a career as a specialty doctor

I have been working as a specialty doctor within the trust for the past two years and prior to this I was part of the O&G national training scheme. Working within the same trust for an extended period of time has afforded me a better work life balance whilst allowing me to become a well integrated member of the department. I feel better able to contribute to long term projects within the department whilst still being able to develop my clinical and leadership skills.

Leading clinical improvements

Over the past year, I have been leading the implementation of a point of care ultrasound machine for the acute gynaecology service within the hospital, something which I attribute to the permanence and stability of my specialty doctor role.

Supporting medical education

This year, I have been appointed as lead for undergraduate education with the O&G department. This means overseeing medical students from two different schools, organising their timetables, supporting students in difficulty and collaborating with sexual health and neonatal colleagues to deliver their curriculum. I also have a team of two clinical teaching fellows.

Guiding the next generation

I am also educational and clinical supervisor for foundation doctors this year which is a privilege to be afforded. I hope to use these educational roles to educate about different career pathways including the alternative options of portfolio pathways, specialty and specialist roles.
