About Dr Obinna Izuchukwu

Dr Obinna Izuchukwu Oraekwe works as a Specialty Doctor in obstetrics and gynaecology at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King’s Lynn NHS Foundation Trust. He represents the East of England as an RCOG SAS and LED Co-Representative.

Choosing the SAS pathway

Following completion of my specialist training in Nigeria, I began working in the United Kingdom as a locally employed doctor during my RCOG Medical Training Initiative in 2019. In 2023, I transitioned to a specialty doctor contract.  I chose the SAS pathway because it allows me to focus on clinical excellence and teaching while maintaining a healthy work–life balance. What I value most about being a SAS doctor is the stability it offers and the opportunity to develop deeper connections with colleagues, patients, and the wider maternity service.

Championing education and training

I currently serve as the SAS/LED Representative in my department and the Co-Representative for the East of England Deanery on the RCOG SAS and LED Committee. These roles involve representing SAS and LED colleagues at departmental and regional meetings, chairing SAS/LED meetings, and contributing to guideline development, and service improvement. I am also actively involved in teaching and training, delivering bedside teaching and formal skills sessions for medical students, GP trainees, and junior doctors, and providing workplace-based assessments and mentorship.

Leadership, advocacy and impact

These leadership and educational roles have enhanced my confidence, strengthened my voice within the trust, and increased the visibility of SAS doctors in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. By contributing to clinical governance, recruitment panels, and audit projects, I help shape local policy and support quality improvement. I find it deeply rewarding to advocate for colleagues, empower early career doctors, and contribute to a culture of safe, patient-centred care.
