The case for change

Racism in the O&G workforce in the UK continues to affect both healthcare professionals and patients. Many doctors from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds face racism, harassment and discrimination at work. There is a need for a concerted effort, from leaders to frontline workers, to push for better reporting, recording and action when acts of microaggression and racism occur. Current mechanisms for reporting are inadequate and deter staff from raising concerns.

A diverse, inclusive and well-supported O&G workforce is crucial to delivering equitable healthcare outcomes and ensure the women and people they care for feel safe, heard and respected.

The role of the RCOG

The RCOG is committed to working towards racial equity in the UK, through listening to our membership, raising awareness and sharing examples of good practice that can overcome differential attainment and workplace discrimination.

Practical tools to support inclusive practice

Race Equity in the Workforce: eLearning package

Hosted on RCOG Learning, this free resource includes six interactive modules that support O&G professionals to reflect, learn and embed inclusive practices in their everyday work. It is about embedding inclusive training, challenging bias, improving communication, and ensuring that the care we provide is equitable, respectful, and culturally competent.

The modules blend:

  • Real-world scenarios
  • Interactive learning activities
  • Guided reflection and discussion tools

The package is designed to empower every member of staff, at every level, to be a part of meaningful change, not just in conversation, but also through action.
