Who we are
The British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP), founded in 1972, is a forum for the discussion and debate of all matters pertaining to the prevention of cancer of the cervix. By its very nature, the Society is multidisciplinary, a fact that almost certainly explains its strengths and continued growth.
Most, if not all, members find membership, and particularly attendance at the Annual Scientific Meeting, a major influence in their practice and a key feature of their postgraduate education. Change affects all branches of healthcare and cervical disease is no exception.
What we do
The BSCCP is committed to the provision of quality-assured colposcopy services through training, certification and continuing education.
We have developed a training programme which has been used as a template for the development of colposcopy training across Europe by the European Federation for Colposcopy (EFC). Training is assessed by an oral exam (OSCE) which is provided three times a year. A training session is provided as an integral part of the annual Scientific Meeting.
The BSCCP has always been active in the promotion of research and audit. The balance between basic science, epidemiology, clinical care and service/patient interface is a characteristic of the Society, typified by the high standard and variety of papers presented at the annual meeting.
We advocate for excellence in the provision of cervical cancer prevention strategies and work in close collaboration with the NHS Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCSP) as well as international societies such as the EFC and the International Federation of Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy (IFCPC).
How we do this
The BSCCP runs courses in basic and advanced colposcopy as well as pre-OSCE courses. We have a growing membership and collect information on the certification status of colposcopists as well as increasingly providing online training resources. A process of recertification is required every 3 years and we provide a mechanism to capture the necessary audit returns to facilitate this. We run a successful scientific meeting in spring every year.
