This page describes the links between the ultrasound modules and Advanced Training Skills Modules (ATSMs) and subspecialty training.
The three intermediate ultrasound modules are free-standing, but do align with certain ATSMs and subspecialty training programmes, as outlined below:
For some ATSMs, you can undertake the intermediate ultrasound modules before (usually at ST4–5) or parallel to the ATSM (usually at ST6–7) – please see below for more details.
For some ATSMs and subspecialty curricula, you’ll need to develop further ultrasound skills in addition to those acquired at intermediate level. For more detailed information, please refer to the specific ATSM or subspecialty curriculum.
Intermediate ultrasound of normal fetal anatomy

ATSMs
This module is essential if you want to undertake the ATSM in fetal medicine. You’ll need to complete the ultrasound module before commencing the ATSM.
Subspecialty training
This module is essential if you want to undertake subspecialty training in maternal and fetal medicine. You’ll need to complete the ultrasound module before commencing your subspecialty training.
In exceptional cases you may be able to complete the ultrasound module in parallel with your subspecialty training, but you’ll need approval from both your Subspecialty Training Programme Supervisor and your Deanery Specialty Training Committee/School of O&G.
Intermediate ultrasound in gynaecology

ATSMs
This module is recommended if you want to undertake the ATSMs in acute gynaecology and early pregnancy, advanced laparoscopic surgery for the excision of benign disease or subfertility and reproductive health. You can complete the ultrasound module either before or parallel to ATSM training, depending on your individual needs.
Subspecialty training
You can complete this ultrasound module either before or parallel to subspecialty training, depending on your individual needs. If you wish to complete the training in parallel, you’ll need to discuss this and gain approval in advance from your Subspecialty Training Programme Supervisor and Deanery Ultrasound Coordinator.
Intermediate ultrasound of early pregnancy complications
