Important update on the Medical Training Initiative (MTI)

7 Apr 2026

NHS England has decided to close the MTI scheme to new applicants with immediate effect from 31 March 2026.

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) has given assurance that for those already on the scheme and those due to receive their Certificate of Sponsorship before 30 June 2026, nothing will change. However, no new applications will be progressed at this time.

The MTI scheme has made a valuable contribution to the NHS and to international medical training, and we know that many of you have supported it through supervision, training, and engagement with participating doctors. We are very grateful for your ongoing commitment.

We would like to reassure you that this decision is not a reflection of the quality of MTI doctors, who continue to provide a highly valued service to patients and healthcare teams.

The RCOG has participated in the MTI scheme since its inception in 2012 and has sponsored more than 550 doctors through the programme to date. The scheme has formed an important part of the College’s charitable mission and international education offer, supporting global workforce development and professional training. It is therefore with considerable regret that we see this highly valued philanthropic programme come to a close.

We will continue to support doctors currently on the scheme and will share any updates we receive regarding future developments, including potential successor arrangements, in due course.
