Associate Editor | The Obstetrician & Gynaecologist (TOG) Editorial Board

Responsibilities of an Associate Editor on the TOG Editorial Board include reviewing proposals for articles, reviewing and editing submitted articles, writing and editing multiple choice (CPD) and SBA questions and contributing to the development of new digital content. The TOG Editorial Board are particularly looking for Associate Editors with expertise in sexual health, reproductive medicine, maternal/fetal medicine, gynaecological oncology, anaesthetics and generalists. 

The TOG Editorial Board is responsible for ensuring the journal remains a valuable resource for clinicians’ professional development in women’s health, developing editorial strategy and ensuring that TOG content is accurate, reliable, accessible and authoritative. The Board meets two times a year remotely.

This appointment is for a three year term beginning in January 2026 and will be appointed by CV, application and interview (if required).

You must be a Consultant or equivalent in women’s health to apply for this position. We welcome applications from SAS/LE Doctors.

Associate Editor, The Obstetrician & Gynaecologist (TOG) Editorial Board

Three years, starting in January 2026

The Obstetrician & Gynaecologist (TOG) is the RCOG’s editorially independent educational and continuing professional development (CPD) journal. TOG provides all health professionals working in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology (O&G) with an up-to-date, peer-reviewed information resource. The journal regularly features reviews, clinical governance articles, education papers, letters and CPD-creditable questions.

TOG Associate Editors join the TOG Editorial Board to ensure the journal remains a valuable resource for clinicians’ professional development in women’s health, by assisting the Editor-in-Chief in ensuring that the content of TOG is accurate, credible, reliable, accessible and authoritative.

  • Reviewing proposals
  • Reviewing and editing articles
  • Advising on and inviting suitable referees
  • Writing and editing multiple choice (CPD) and SBA questions
  • Suggesting topics for commissioned articles
  • Attending (by videoconference) two board meetings per annum
  • Discussing/recommending promotional opportunities
  • Contributing to the development of new digital content

On average, the Associate Editor would be expected to:

  • Review proposals once per month
  • Handle up to three manuscripts (inviting referees/reviewing/editing an article) per year
  • Act as CPD Editor (reviewing CPD and SBA questions) for at least two manuscripts per year, assisting with finalising SBA questions for all manuscripts if possible
  • Attend (by videoconference) two Editorial Board meetings per annum
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives on an ad-hoc basis

This role reflects the current requirements of the post. As duties and responsibilities change and develop, the role description will be reviewed and be subject to amendment in consultation with the post holder.

Person specification

Consultant or equivalent in women’s health, particularly with expertise in urogynaecology, sexual health or primary care.

Essential

  • Three published peer-reviewed articles

Desirable

  • Published review articles
  • Record of peer-reviewing in women’s health
  • Record of serving on the editorial board of a journal in women’s health
  • Evidence of contributing editorial material to journals (e.g. commentaries)
  • At least three contributions to TOG (e.g. writing an article or commentary, acting as a peer reviewer or writing a book/website/app review)
  • Experience in medical education and/or training

Essential

  • An understanding of the remit of TOG as a review journal
  • An understanding of the role of TOG within the RCOG’s CPD programme
  • An interest in writing and editing CPD and SBA questions and content
  • A good understanding of the peer review process
  • Excellent written skills

Desirable

  • An understanding of some of the wider issues affecting scholarly publishing
  • Experience of writing/reviewing SBA questions

Committee Chair/Member/Course Convenors and Organisers

If within your committee role or work as course convenor or organiser you gain knowledge which enhances patient care or leadership and technical skills (including, for example, giving presentations, teaching sessions or mock examining) credits can be claimed as an ‘Experiential Learning Event’.

CPD users can now freely select and record the number of credits for all their CPD activities. For Experiential Learning Events, a Reflection is required to claim the selected credits. In addition, 1 or 2 credits can be claimed for an action following the learning (1 credit for a simple action, 2 credits for a complex action). To claim credits for an action, the individual needs to demonstrate how they have applied their learning to their practice, the service they provide and/or the potential impact of the learning.

For those who prefer to follow RCOG recommendations, the CPD Framework still provides a suggested number of credits that can be claimed for different CPD activities.

  • To champion The Obstetrician & Gynaecologist (TOG) journal and its value as an educational resource in women’s health
  • With the support of the RCOG Education team, to set out and develop TOG’s editorial strategy to ensure the journal remains a valuable resource for clinicians’ professional development
  • To develop the CPD role of the journal in line with the changing requirements of the RCOG’s CPD programme
  • To ensure that sufficient high-quality material is submitted to or commissioned for publication in the journal
  • To ensure all TOG content is accurate, credible, reliable, accessible and authoritative, overseeing peer review of articles
  • To ensure TOG’s content is balanced and valuable for all of the RCOG membership, including international members and Registered Trainees
  • To contribute from a clinical perspective to the development of new content initiatives for TOG
