Chair | Education Quality Assurance Committee (EQAC)

The Education Quality Assurance Committee (EQAC) is responsible for approving/declining College educational resources.

EQAC particularly evaluates emerging product concepts and technologies to determine strategic fit, market potential, feasibility, and alignment with College goals. The Committee reports to the Education Board and consists of a specialised group of clinicians to review applications with expertise in education and training.

Key responsibilities of the Chair role include: 

  • Oversee the work of EQAC that has the responsibility for quality assuring the approval of new product proposals, courses and programmes for the College
  • Ensure that products, courses and programme proposals adhere to College processes and proposals have feedback on further reiterations if required, taking Chair’s action as appropriate
  • Report on the committee’s activities to relevant College committees 

Additional responsibilities cover:

  • With the support of the Committee, set the agendas and ensure that decisions taken are properly and effectively followed up and completed
  • Represent EQAC at Education Board meetings
  • Recommend future membership of the Committee 
  • In conjunction with Committee support, produce reports on EQAC activities to Education Board meetings

EQAC meets two times a year remotely.

This appointment is for a three-year term, commencing as soon as possible in early 2026, and will be appointed by interview. 

UK Fellows and Members in a current substantive post at consultant level are eligible to apply for this position.

Education Board

Three-year term commencing January 2026

The Education Quality Assurance Committee (EQAC) is responsible for evaluating emerging product concepts and technologies to determine strategic fit, market potential, feasibility, and alignment with College goals. The Committee reports to the RCOG Education Board and consists of a group of clinicians with major interests and expertise in education and training from the relevant Committees and Honorary Roles they currently hold. The Committee working alongside lay and RCOG staff representation, has formal responsibility for evaluating new product proposals, and has oversight of the maintenance of existing educational resources. It does this by scrutinising new product proposals, receiving reports from  resource providers on quality processes and reviews.   

  • Oversee the work of EQAC
  • Chair two meetings a year
  • Ensure that the product proposal process is smoothly implemented by taking Chair’s action to approve proposals, with the benefit of EQAC members’ input, and report to the next EQAC meeting  
  • With the support of the Committee secretary, set the agendas and ensure that decisions taken are properly and effectively followed up and completed
  • Represent EQAC at Education Board meetings
  • Recommend future membership of the Committee
  • In conjunction with RCOG staff, produce reports on EQAC activities to Education Board meetings 

EQAC works with College educational committees, Global Education Directorate, The Women’s Network, Events and eLearning. 

The nature of the role means that the EQAC Committee Chair will be required to handle a fluctuating workload. It is up to the candidate to discuss and agree this with their NHS employer.

It will be a requirement of the role to attend the following meetings at the RCOG: 

  • EQAC meetings (twice a year)
  • Education Board (four times a year)

It will be a requirement to undertake work digitally as required between meetings; i.e. to deal with Committee matters, including taking action to approve product proposals on a regular basis. 

This role reflects the present requirements of the post. As duties and responsibilities change and develop the role description will be reviewed and be subject to amendment in consultation with the post holder.  

The role description will be re-evaluated at the end of the term.   

Person specification

Essential  

  • Registered with a licence to practise with the GMC, in good standing
  • FRCOG/MRCOG
  • Current substantive post at Consultant, SAS or senior locally employed doctor in obstetrics and/or gynaecology in UK NHS practice  
  • Evidence of annual appraisal
  • Evidence of equal opportunities and diversity training within previous three years
  • Recognised Clinical or Educational Supervisor 

 

Desirable 

  • Member of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management or equivalent
  • Quality assurance qualification or evidence of training  

Essential 

  • Experience of taking part in quality assurance processes in education or experience of undergraduate quality assurance 
  • Experience of and understanding of GMC Regulatory System
  • Experience of quality management processes 

 

Desirable 

  • Experienced external visitor for quality assurance processes (visits, ARCPs)
  • Can evidence effecting change through a QA process
  • GMC Partner or equivalent  
  • Good understanding of the principles of quality assurance and governance
  • Excellent knowledge of RCOG core educational products
  • Able to pay great attention to detail as well as ability to view the bigger picture
  • Be aware of current educational developments both in O&G and in postgraduate medical education more generally
  • Be aware of the requirements of the GMC in relation to the quality assurance of postgraduate medical education
  • Clear demonstration of a commitment to improving women’s health

Committee Chair/Member/Course Convenors and Organisers

If within your committee role or work as course convenor or organiser you gain knowledge which enhances patient care or leadership and technical skills (including, for example, giving presentations, teaching sessions or mock examining) credits can be claimed as an ‘Experiential Learning Event’.

CPD users can now freely select and record the number of credits for all their CPD activities. For Experiential Learning Events, a Reflection is required to claim the selected credits. In addition, 1 or 2 credits can be claimed for an action following the learning (1 credit for a simple action, 2 credits for a complex action). To claim credits for an action, the individual needs to demonstrate how they have applied their learning to their practice, the service they provide and/or the potential impact of the learning.

For those who prefer to follow RCOG recommendations, the CPD Framework still provides a suggested number of credits that can be claimed for different CPD activities.

Terms of reference

The Education Quality Assurance Committee (EQAC) is responsible for approving/declining College educational resources. EQAC particularly evaluates emerging product concepts and technologies to determine strategic fit, market potential, feasibility, and alignment with College goals. The Committee reports to the Education Board and consists of a specialised group of clinicians to review applications with expertise in education and training. 

EQAC will: 

  1. develop an overall strategy for educational QA for approval by the Education Board.  The strategy will encompass all College educational activity and will adhere to the GMC’s Quality Improvement Framework.
  2. provide advice on quality assurance to all College Committees and Directorates concerned with Education. 
  3. oversee the two-stage process for education product approval, including non-RCOG course endorsement, according to criteria that are patient-centred, educationally sound and that meet the defined educational needs of specified target audiences. The Committee review and approve the education product proposal together with input from internal education departments. 
  4. champion the principles of the GMC’s Quality Improvement Framework and will ensure QA best practice in the College.  The Committee will report on QA matters to the GMC, as required, by means of annual specialty reports, responses to concerns, and other GMC matters.
  5. ensure that the College has the appropriate evidence base and datasets to inform QA judgements in education products.   
  6. ensure that appropriate ongoing benchmarking of education standards and resources takes place, and that information is shared with the appropriate partners. The Committee will share good practice with Education Board.
  7. develop and oversee systems for the regular systematic reviews of all College educational resources. The Committee will determine the structure and content of these reviews and surveys. This will be part of a continuous feedback mechanism from trainers, trainees, patients and others.
  8. ensure that the College’s learning resources are integrated and complementary, and it will provide a forum for clinical dialogue between the Assessors and the committee.
  9. have the right to co-opt appropriate clinical expertise for specific pieces of work.  

The committee will meet twice per year. The remaining work to be undertaken digitally as required.
