Overview

It is now known that a number of 3rd and 4th degree tears, collectively known as Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injuries (OASIs) are being missed by doctors and midwives or inadequately repaired resulting in anal incontinence.

The attendees of this workshop will become familiar with the new classification of OASIs and develop clinical skills in the techniques of accurate diagnosis. Using the anal sphincter animal model, techniques in repair of the internal and external sphincter will be taught hands-on. Prevention and management of subsequent pregnancy will also be discussed.

The interactive lectures and audio-visual material will provide tips and tricks to recognise and repair OASIs, and the hands-on workshop  using Cow anal sphincters will prepare the delegates for real-time in the Delivery Room

Overview

Obstetric hemorrhage including PPH is a leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide. The workshop attendees will become familiar with the prevention and early diagnosis of PPH, including blood loss assessment. An in-depth understanding of the importance of communication, leadership and timely intervention during PPH management will be demonstrated. The attendees will also refresh their clinical skills with different PPH management options and principles of blood transfusion.

  • Understand the prevention of PPH, including its relationship with maternal anaemia
  • Learn how to identify the early symptoms and signs of PPH
  • Understand the importance of timely fluid resuscitation and therapies including principles for blood transfusion
