This video is an introduction to the upcoming pilot that will test the proposed changes to the training matrix of progression.
The RCOG Surgical Skills Project was established in response to feedback from trainees and trainers across the UK regarding access to surgical opportunities and the future of surgical training. A key aim of the project is to listen to those experiences and explore innovative ways to improve training for the next generation of O&G surgeons.
As part of this work, the RCOG Surgical Skills Training Matrix Pilot is a national programme exploring how earlier exposure to core gynaecological surgical procedures can better support the development of confident and competent O&G surgeons. Developed through the Surgical Skills Project in collaboration with trainees, trainers, Heads of School and educational leaders, the pilot will test selected changes to the training matrix from August 2026 in participating regions.
Alongside earlier procedural exposure, the pilot will also explore enhanced use of surgical logbooks, formative simulation and structured feedback to improve the quality of surgical training while ensuring trainee progression remains protected throughout the pilot period.
Importantly, this pilot represents an exciting opportunity for trainees to help shape the future of surgical training. Developed directly in response to feedback gathered through the Surgical Skills Project, it reflects the College's commitment to listening to trainees and ensuring that future change is informed by your experiences, your challenges and your ideas for improvement.
